NUGA 2013: OAU unveils logo, mascot for NUGA


 The host of the 2013 Nigerian Universities Games, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has unveiled the logo and mascot for the tournament which is scheduled to hold from October 2 to 13.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole, the authorities of the university have made arrangements and put final touches to renovation and upgrading of facilities that would be used for the 24th edition of the NUGA competition.  They were unveiled at the conference room of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Guest House, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said the university was ready to make NUGA achieve its aims of creating, developing and discovering new talents in all the sporting events.
He said, “We have hosted two earlier editions of NUGA championships in 1970 and in 1984 respectively but this year’s edition holding in October will be the best NUGA ever in the history of this country. We have done some renovations and consummations on all the facilities, most especially the IAAD-compliant swimming pool and tartan track which are second to none in Nigeria.”


Speaking at the unveiling ceremony that had former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju and former Falcons goalkeeper Ann Chiejine in attendance, vice chancellor of OAU, Professor Bamitale Omole expressed the university’s readiness to organise the best ever NUGA games.

He said the games, scheduled to commence on October 2, will feature 15 sporting events, some of which are athletics, handball, volleyball, cricket and football.

Professor Omole stated that all the events at the games will take place within the university campus, adding that the facilities for the games will be ready well ahead of the opening ceremony, while thanking the Federal Government for releasing the funds for the construction of an Olympic size swimming pool for the games.

Former Super Eagles player Adepoju who was named one of the ambassadors of the games promised to support the project all the way, adding that it is very important and necessary to identify with the games that will produce the next generation of educated people in the country.
The ‘Headmaster’ as he is fondly called, urged the Federal Government and corporate bodies to support collegiate sport as much as possible.

He noted that the games which will be the 24th edition since inception in 1966, have the potential of producing the next generation of sports men and women that can take the country to the next level if properly packaged.
