PICTURE SPECIAL: Teary-eyed Cristiano Ronaldo wins the Ballon d'Or 2013


FORMER Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been heralded as the best player in the world for 2013 and he couldn't hide his emotions.

Holding back tears the Real Madrid great thanked fans, family and teammates as he picked up the prestigious award for the second time.

Ronaldo first picked up the accolade in 2008 having helped United to Champions League glory but his Barcelona rival Lionel Messi had dominated in recent times, winning the prize in the last four consecutive years.

 

Messi was finally forced to surrender his crown to Ronaldo this year, as the Argentine finished in second place.

“I have to thank. My wife, my friends, my son. It is a tremendously emotional moment”

On receiving the award the Portuguese forward was visibly moved.

Ronaldo said: "First of all I have to say a great thanks to all of my team-mates with the club and the national team.

"Without all of their efforts this would not have been possible. I am very happy, it is very difficult to win this award.

"Everybody that has been involved with me on a personal level I have to thank. My wife, my friends, my son. It is a tremendously emotional moment.

"All I can say is thank you to everybody that has been involved."
